Leer Para Crecer

September 22nd, 2012.
The Second Annual “Leer Para Crecer” (Read to Grow) event took place on Saturday, September 22nd at Gehringer Elementary from 9am to 2pm. Leer Para Crecer is an early child literacy event that was put together in partnership with the Oakley Union Elementary School District, the Friends of Oakley and the Leer Para Crecer Committee.
This year’s event had keynote speaker Roxanne Ocampo, author of “Flight of the Quetzal Mama: How to raise Latino Superstars and get them into the Best Colleges”. Mayor Kevin Romick attended the event in order to read “Buenas Noches Luna” or “Goodnight Moon” in Spanish to the audience. Participants were able to attend three bilingual literacy workshops for parents to learn tools that will help with their child’s literacy abilities. Workshops were followed by lunch which was provided by the Oakley Union Elementary School District, while Los Charros (Oakley) and El Camino (Brentwood) provided lunch for all of the hardworking volunteers.

Entertainment consisted of the O’Hara Park Middle School Ballet Folklorico and two short skits that were performed by Art Fernandez and Elsa Fernandez. School District Administrators attended the event in support of the work and District-wide effort to support literacy.
Participants were given additional informational pamphlets and free books that would help parents apply the strategies they learned during the workshops. Parents were also given time to explore the different resources that are available to them such as, Comcast and CCC Library.
